About the artist
Robert Mapplethorpe, 1946 – 1989
‘I went into photography because it seemed like the perfect vehicle for commenting on the madness of today's existence.’
Robert Mapplethorpe was an American photographer who was best known for his black-and-white photographs. Most of his works featured flowers, black people and celebrities, including Andy Warhol,
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Karl Lagerfeld. Mapplethorpe had been very particular about dealing with lighting and structure which lead his works to much delicacy and classic. The album cover of Horses of the famous singer Patti Smith was also shot by Mapplethorpe.
